This comes from a massive independent study of nearly 12 million Google search results. I didn’t run it, but I sure studied it like my paycheck depended on it.

1. Backlinks are the big dogs

If other websites link to yours, especially well-known and trustworthy ones, Google starts to see your site as more important. It’s like getting a recommendation from someone respected in your industry.

The more quality links you’ve got, the better your chances.


2. Quantity matters too

The top spot on Google usually has around four times more backlinks than the websites in positions two through ten.

If you’re not building links regularly, your competitors probably are. That alone can leave you stuck on page two where nobody looks.


3. Strong content wins every time

Pages with content that fully cover a topic outperform those that skim the surface. This isn’t just about word count. It’s about answering questions, solving problems, and giving readers what they came for.

The better your content, the longer visitors stick around. Google notices.


4. Page speed is not the holy grail

Despite all the talk about fast websites, my study found no clear connection between speed and higher rankings.

Don’t ignore performance, but don’t let it distract you from the stuff that actually moves the needle.


5. The more referring domains, the better

Getting ten links from one website is fine, but getting five links from five different websites is much more valuable.

Spread your reach. The more websites talking about you, the more authority you build.


6. Your keyword in the title tag is not everything

People used to obsess over this. The truth is, putting your main keyword in your title doesn’t guarantee better rankings.

Focus on writing titles that attract clicks from real people, not just search engines.


7. Longer pages tend to rank better

The average word count for top-ranking pages sits around 1,500. Short posts are fine for quick updates, but when it comes to ranking, meatier content usually wins.

8. HTML page size doesn’t matter

Google isn’t ranking sites based on how large or small your HTML file is. As long as it works well and loads cleanly, you’re in the clear.


9. Shorter URLs help a little

A good rule of thumb is to use simple slugs that describe the page without sounding like a novel.


10. Schema markup looks nice but won’t boost you alone

Structured data helps Google display rich results, but it doesn’t seem to impact where you land in the rankings. Use it for user experience, but don’t expect it to bump you up by itself.


11. Time on site is a major signal

If people stick around and actually read your content, Google pays attention. The longer visitors stay, the more it signals that your page is useful. So keep things interesting.

Make it helpful, maybe even fun. Toss in a bad pun if it fits.
